Anyone who is missing teeth and can benefit from increased chewing efficiency is a candidate for dental implants. They may be the answer for those who can no longer wear removable dentures. A discussion with Drs.Bradford, Ingalls, Kean, Parker and Johnson will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. Thousands of people are turning to dental implants to replace a single missing tooth, several teeth, or all teeth. They are an excellent alternative to cutting down adjacent healthy teeth for bridgework.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal fixtures placed into the upper or lower jaw to replace missing teeth. They can also be placed to stabilize dentures. Dental implants are made of titanium which is readily accepted by the body. The titanium actually bonds to the bone, creating a strong foundation for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Some implants are placed under the gum tissue and allowed to heal for a period of time prior to uncovering and use. Other implant types are immediately restored with a crown or denture, greatly decreasing the healing period and requiring only one procedure. Your doctor will discuss which system would be appropriate for you, based upon your examination and health history.

Dental Implant Placement

For most patients, dental implant placement requires two procedures. First, the implant is placed into the jaw under the gum tissue. It is allowed to heal undisturbed for four to six months, gradually bonding to the bone. You will be able to wear temporary tooth replacements or your own denture during this healing period. Once the implant has bonded to the bone, a post is then placed which protrudes through the gum tissue. These posts may accept a crown, bridge, or other fixture such as a denture. The entire process usually takes from four to nine months. Most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily life. The actual procedures are typically performed under a comfort anesthesia.

We also offer a dental implant system which only requires a single procedure for placement. This can significantly reduce the time of the entire process.

A thorough oral examination, x-rays, and medical consultation by Drs.Bradford, Ingalls, Kean, Parker and Johnson will be performed to determine if you are candidate for dental implants. We will work as team with your general dentist to evaluate your particular case.

Dental implants are now quite common. Patients are surprised to discover the ease of the placement and restoration of dental implants. Please call our office for more information or to set up an appointment for evaluation for dental implants.
